Friday Reflections

.) The Church doesn't talk enough about greed and the evil that come from money.

.) At 90, Wole Soyinka visits his younger, more optimistic self.

.) A writer's quest to find the con artist (Yahoo Boy) who duped his mother.

.) I randomly remembered I never quite talked about President Jimmy Carter after he passed. So here goes:  If “I have fought a good fight, I have finished the race…” was a person. What a man. What a president. Genuinely the personification of kindness and humility. I am so inspired by his life and how he lived out his faith as demonstrated in his equal treatment of ALL people. I have no doubt he is resting in the Lord because this man had good fruits. He could have retired from the presidency and continued to amass wealth. No. He went back to peanut farming —just a life of service and generosity. When I grow up, I want to be like him!

.) This tiny thing is a massive cause of divorce (hint: not divorce, sex, or even arguing). I feel like this isn't just restricted to marriage. I've been trying found the words to actually describe it and never quite have till now. If I'm in any kind of dynamic (friendship, relationship whatever) and anyone tries to dim my light or emotionally shuts me down, they are OUT.

.) A Chinese agent tried to recruit a Stanford student.

.) "Black women lost 319, 000 jobs between February and July of this year, the only major female demographic to experience significant job losses during this five-month period. White men saw the largest increase--365000--among groups."  - The New York Times. I know this is intentional. Ninety-Two percent of us voted against this man and his ilk. Yet, if there is one thing about it, it is this: we will rise. Whether it is 16th century America or 19th century Jim Crow era or 1920s Aba or 1950s Abeokuta, Black women thrive.

.) "Quitting was never an option." - Chimamanda talks about her writing journey. What a legend.

.) I have been thinking of how to share this; how to delve into this really complex issue and give it the weight it's worth. But in the meantime, here goes. Everyone who is a daughter and who has a daughter should watch this. Some parts were so emotionally poignant, I actually cried. Maybe I will have the emotional wherewithal for a full length post on this. Maybe not.

.) Why are Black people still Christian? Ah this one is even more relevant in the face of recent events. It's becoming increasingly clear how steeped evangelicalism is in christian nationalism.  I'm not worried though. I KNOW God. And that's the answer here: pick up that Bible and read it for yourself.

.) This food will save you from colon cancer. The rise of cancer among young people is frightening. I don't believe food is medicine; y'all medicine IS medicine. I do believe in the power of food to PREVENT life-threatening diseases though. And I will keep hammering on that. Fiber. Fiber. Fiber. I am imploring you all to eat your vegetables. To eat your legumes (BEANS!!!!!). To eat your fruits. It's that simple. Forget the gimmicks, the cleanses, the fasts, the gmo or organic bullshit. Just eat real food and do so in moderation.
